Toenail fungus is not the most pleasant of topics, but it is a common problem for so many people. While it’s estimated that almost 40 million Americans have this undesirable issue, the number is greatest in the elderly. This type of fungus, called Onychomycosis, may cause a discoloration in the toenails. Nails may become either white, brown, or yellow. In some severe cases, the toenails become thick and brittle. Not only is this painful, it can be embarrassing which negatively impacts the mind. Let’s delve into ways to naturally combat this yucky foot problem. Everyone wants pretty, happy feet.
Baking Soda
Studies show that baking soda is an effective natural treatment for toenail fungus. To use this natural approach, make a paste with baking soda and water and soak your toenails in the paste for 10 minutes before rinsing off. You may also do a 30 minute foot soak with baking soda and water. Either is a great way to get the nails cleaned and prepped for using one of the natural remedies below.
Oregano & Tea Tree Essential Oil
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. I love essential oils and this is my favorite natural remedy for toenail fungus. Studies show that tea tree essential oil and oregano essential oil have a positive effect in the battle against toenail fungus. My favorite combination is using both Tea Tree and Oregano Oil together. I use dōTERRA essential oils because these oils are pure, potent, and beyond organic. Whichever company you select for essential oils, make sure it is reputable company and the oils are tested for purity and potency.
Because essential oils are so potent, it is important to dilute them with a carrier oil. Combine 2 drops of Tea Tree and 2 drops of Oregano Oil with a tablespoon of a carrier oils such as olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, or grapeseed oil. Apply to your toe nails and cover with breathable non slip socks or shoes, so you don’t slip with the oils on your toes. Do this at least 3-4 times a day for 2 months, according to Dr. Axe, for the best results.
You may also create a 10ml roller ball bottle with 10 drops each of tea tree oil and oregano oil topped off with FCO (Fractionated Coconut Oil). Roll onto clean unpainted toenails 3-4 times a day.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Studies also show that Eucalyptus Oil has an antifungal effect for mild cases of fungal infections. Combine Eucalyptus with olive oil or coconut oil (also known to be antifungal) onto the toenails several times per day. Cover with breathable socks or shoes.
Other Essential Oils
One study showed that a combination of the essential oils lavender, petitgrain, ylang ylang, clary sage, and jasmine had an antimicrobial effect. Combine 2 drops each of these oils in a 10ml Roller Bottle Ball and top off with fractionated coconut oil. Gently combine the oils before rolling onto the toe nails 3-4 times a day. Cover with breathable socks or shoes so you do not slip with oils on your feet.
Garlic
Garlic may be used on the toes for antifungal benefits. Chop garlic cloves and cover toenails with the chopped garlic for 30 minutes before rinsing off. Another option for external use of garlic is to make a garlic oil. This is my favorite garlic oil recipe.
Garlic Oil Recipe
- 1 Tablespoon of Chopped Garlic
- 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
- 3 Tablespoons of Fractionated (liquified) Coconut Oil
Combine all ingredients. This garlic oil recipe may be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month. Soak toenails several times daily with the garlic oil for 30 minutes before rinsing off. ALWAYS be careful when using oils as the feet will become slippery. Garlic may also be taken internally for antifungal benefits. Consuming raw garlic is so good for your health. If you are not a fan of eating raw or cooked garlic, my favorite garlic supplement is by Pure Encapsulations.
Nutrition Matters
Nutrition plays an important role for overall health. Here are some ways to improve your nutrition for optimal health.
Probiotics
If you are not already taking a probiotic, I suggest you start immediately. I prefer doTERRA PB Assist for my family. I also like Pure Encapsulations Pure Probiotics. Both supplements are 3rd party tested, so you may incorporate these products with the knowledge of purity and potency. Gut health is key for overcoming fungal problems such as candida.
Turmeric
Curcumin is my go to for all sorts of health ailments. Studies show that Turmeric has an antifungal effect. I use Turmeric Essential Oil, Turmeric Pills, and Ground Turmeric in my diet for all the health benefits.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. The more color you add to your plate, the better your health will be.
Eat lean proteins and wild caught salmon to promote nail health and growth.
Changing your nutrition and using the natural remedies above will have you on a great start to better nail health.
When trimming your nails, always cut straight across to prevent ingrown nails. Wash and dry your feet daily.
Don’t forget to always use caution when applying oils to your feet as they may become slippery. Be prepared with a towel to dry feet or non slip socks or breathable shoes.
If you don’t already have an oil lady, I would love the opportunity to be your go to for all things oils! Message me to learn more.
Cheers to saying goodbye to stinky feet and toenail fungus.
